nobedofroses asked: I love your blog, and enjoy reading anything written by people who share my love for the presidency. I am writing my Masters thesis on Woodrow Wilson, specifically about his relationship with Colonel House. Having just read your piece titled 'A Paralysed Presidency', I felt compelled to make some comments. Firstly, I think it is wrong to focus just on the tragic nature of Wilson's presidency, as easy as that is to do. Prior to 1919, it would be extremely difficult to fault Wilson as president. Creating the Federal Reserve, antitrust legislation and revising the tariff in his first term were monumental legislative achievements. He then defeated a united Republican party in 1916, and helped to win the First World War, securing a peace based on his Fourteen Points. He then attempted to moderate intense French demands during the Paris Peace Conference, which would have resulted in an even more crippling peace treaty. While I understand that Wilson can be seen as a stubborn, puritanical, uncompromising figure, it cannot be denied that if he had managed to secure ratification of the Treaty of Versailles, he would have gone down as one of the great presidents.
